Los barcos de clase Graf Zeppelin estaban equipados con una propulsión clásica de turbinas de vapor. El portaaviones líder, en concreto, tenía unidades de turbinas de engranajes y calderas fabricadas en Suiza. Sin embargo, los alemanes creían que, para que los barcos incursores tuvieran una autonomía de crucero amplia y una velocidad adecuada, era absolutamente necesario que sus plantas de propulsión principales fuesen de tipo diésel.
